CIMA

Why CIMA?

If you are starting to think about your future and aiming to develop a truly successful and diverse career in business, CIMA can accelerate you towards achieving your career goals.

The CIMA Professional Qualification provides more strategy, more management accounting and more relevance across a broad business perspective, than any other professional accountancy qualifications. It will give you the expertise in finance and provide you with the skills to make key decisions in business and advise others of the financial implications of decisions.

CIMA is the world’s largest and leading professional body of management accountants. CIMA has 172,000 members and students in 165 countries worldwide. They work at the heart of business.

Why is CIMA different?
1. CIMA Creates Accountants for Business
Most accounting qualifications train people for private practice, working on external audit and tax issues - creating “accountants for accounting firms”. CIMA, on the other hand, prepares people for a career in business. It teaches skills for strategic advice, managing risk and making key decisions. In short, CIMA focuses on creating the “accountant for business”, rather than the “accountant for accounting firms”. Most CIMA members are working in multinational manufacturing firms, hotels, finance companies, banks, consultancy companies, and other commercial entities.
‘I did the CIMA qualification and I’d take people from CIMA anytime. They’re basically business people with a finance orientation, not just accountants.
Andrew Higginson, Finance and Strategy Director, Tesco, plc.

2. CIMA Trains Individuals to Be Future CEO’s
If one wishes to be a CEO, studying CIMA provides a good solid foundation. CIMA is built on three learning pillars – the ENTERPRISE pillar, PERFORMANCE pillar and FINANCIAL pillar. Within these pillars, one will learn strategy, finance, risk management, management accounting, financial accounting, audit, basic taxation, information system, law, and economics. In addition, CIMA trains individuals using real life & practical scenarios known as case studies. By learning all these knowledge & applying them in case studies, an individual will slowly progress from the role of an operational management staff to a manager and finally to that of a CEO who makes strategic decisions.

‘The business leaders of the future must have the financial skills and operational competencies in order to succeed. The CIMA qualification provides a solid foundation to build them.’
Lee Yee Chong,
Managing Director, CCM Pharmaceuticals Group, Malaysia.

3. CIMA is your Passport to Becoming An Accountant in Singapore & Malaysia
A CIMA graduate can also choose to be in private practice; that is, work in an accounting firm in audit or taxation. In fact, many CIMA graduates are practising as accountants in Singapore and Malaysia. In Malaysia, CIMA is recognised by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and so CIMA members are eligible to be Chartered Accountants in Malaysia. In Singapore, CIMA is recognized by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) and receives an exemption of 3 ICPAS Professional Exam modules. CIMA graduates will only need to sit & pass 2 modules (i.e. on tax and law) in order to be Certified Public Accountants in Singapore.

4. CIMA is a Double Major Qualification (in Accounting & in Business Administration)
Some people consider having CIMA is as good as “having an accounting degree plus an MBA”.

Accounting degree + MBA = CIMA

5. CIMA For MBA Holders
CIMA gives credibility to an individual. An MBA holder who seeks more challenge can take up CIMA. In fact, CIMA has a very special scheme for MBA holders called the CIMA masters gateway assessment exam (CMGA). An MBA holder who is interested to take up CIMA can sit for the CMGA. If he passes the CMGA, he shall be granted 11 exemptions, be awarded with a CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting
and shall progress directly to the final level of CIMA (i.e. the strategic level).
