Qualifying as an Advocate and Solicitor

In general, University of London International Programmes LLB graduates can qualify as advocate and solicitor
(i.e. be admitted to the Malaysian Bar) by the following methods :

  1. Sit for and pass the Malaysian Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP), OR
  2. Pass the Bar Vocational Course in UK.

 

WHAT IS CLP AND HOW CAN I APPLY TO SIT FOR THE EXAMINATION?
CLP is the abbreviation for Certificate in Legal Practice. CLP examination is conducted by the
Legal Profession Qualifying Board of Malaysia by virtue of the Legal Profession Act 1976
once every year. In general, LLB graduates from overseas such as UK, Australia, Singapore,
and New Zealand will need to sit for and pass the CLP examination as one of the requirements
to be admitted as advocates and solicitors in Malaysia.
Candidates are examined on the following subjects :

 

  1. Malaysian Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) Examination
    Entry Requirement:
    • 2 Passes at A Level (or STPM) or 2B's in UEC+ 3 Credits in SPM. (All A Level passes and SPM
      Credits must be obtained in one and same sitting of the examination respectively.
      The A-Level shall be studied in a minimum of 1 academic year),
    • Complete the LLB degree within 4 years upon successful completion of the Intermediate (i.e. the first 4 units) examination
    • Take 12 law units which must include the following 6 core-units: Law of Contract,
      Law of Torts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Land Law, and Equity & Trusts, AND
    • Must obtain at least a Second Class Lower
  2.  
  3. Pass the UK Bar Professional Training Course through any of these Inns of Court:
    • The Inner Temple
    • The Middle Temple
    • Gray's Inn
    • Lincoln's Inn
