A University of London LLB from Crescendo provides a robust foundation for your legal career in Malaysia. Crucially, it offers you two distinct pathways to become a qualified lawyer, giving you the flexibility to choose the route that best suits your ambitions.

Route 1: The Malaysian Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) Route

This is the direct and established pathway for practice within Malaysia.

  • Step 1: Complete Your University of London LLB at Crescendo
Your LLB degree provides the core legal knowledge required. Crescendo's teaching is designed to prepare you for the specific demands of the CLP examinations.
  • Step 2: Sit for the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP)
Upon graduation, you are eligible to enrol for the CLP, a compulsory professional examination set by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board of Malaysia.
  • Step 3: Complete Pupillage (Chambering)
After passing the CLP, you will undertake nine months of practical training under a senior lawyer. Successful completion leads to your admission as an Advocate and Solicitor in Malaysia.

Route 2: The UK Bar Course Route

This prestigious pathway allows you to qualify as a Barrister in England and Wales, a qualification recognised by the Malaysian Bar Council for admission as an Advocate and Solicitor without needing to sit for the CLP.

  • Step 1: Complete Your University of London LLB at Crescendo
Your LLB is a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) for England and Wales, satisfying the academic stage of training.
  • Step 2: Undertake UK Barrister Training
Upon graduating with a 2:1 (or strong 2:2), you will progress to the vocational stage in the UK. Leicester Law School has partnerships with the UK's top Bar course providers.
    • Primary Providers: University of Law (ULaw) or BPP University
    • Course Name: Bar Practice Course (BPC) or Barrister Training Course (BTC)
    • Key Requirements:
      • BCAT Test: Pass the Bar Course Aptitude Test before enrolment.
      • English Language: IELTS 7.5 overall (minimum 7.5 in each component) or equivalent.
      • Inn of Court Membership: You must join one of the four Inns of Court (Inner Temple, Middle Temple, Gray's Inn, Lincoln's Inn) before starting the course.
  • Step 3: Financial Overview for UK Bar Training
    • Course Fees (2025/26): Range from £15,635 to £19,000, depending on the provider and campus location (London is more expensive). An additional fee of £840 is payable to the Bar Standards Board.
    • Annual Living Costs in the UK: Estimated at £10,500 - £14,000 outside London, and £13,000 - £17,000 in London.
    • Visa Financial Proof: You must show funds of £1,023 per month for up to 9 months for study outside London (£9,207) or £1,334 per month for London (£12,006), in addition to your first-year course fees.
  • Step 4: Complete Pupillage and Be Called to the Bar
  • After passing the Bar Course, you must secure and complete a pupillage (a period of apprenticeship) in the UK. Successful completion leads to being "Called to the Bar" as a qualified Barrister in England and Wales.
  • Step 5: Be Admitted to the Malaysian Bar
As a qualified UK Barrister who has completed pupillage, you can apply for admission as an Advocate and Solicitor in Malaysia under the specific requirements set by the Malaysian Bar Council.

Why Choose the UK Barrister Route? This path provides a globally prestigious professional title, elite international legal training, and opens doors to practice in multiple Commonwealth jurisdictions. It also allows you to remain in the UK post-graduation on a Graduate Visa, which permits 2-3 years of work experience.

Q: Is the University of London LLB recognised in Malaysia, and can I complete it locally or in the UK?

A: Yes. The University of London LLB is recognised by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB) of Malaysia, making graduates eligible to sit for the CLP examinations. You can complete the programme fully in Malaysia through the 3+0 pathway, or transfer to a UK university after Year 1 or 2 (subject to acceptance). Whether you intend to practise in Malaysia or progress to the UK Bar, eligibility will depend on meeting the entry requirements in place at the time.

Q: Can I use this degree to become a lawyer in the UK?

A: Absolutely. The University of London LLB is a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) for England and Wales. It satisfies the academic component, allowing you to progress directly to the vocational stages of training: the Bar Course (for barristers) or the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) for solicitors.

Q: Who actually awards the degree?

A: Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree by the University of London. The certificate does not mention the mode of study and is identical in standing to the degree awarded to students studying on campus in London.

Q: What are the entry requirements?

A: Entry requirements vary. Generally, they include strong A-Levels, STPM results, or equivalent qualifications (e.g., a Foundation in Law). Please contact our advisors for a detailed assessment of your qualifications.
